Hyderabad: Two arrested for posing as fake cops, kidnapping

Hyderabad: The Yacharam police on Friday caught two persons on charges of posing as cops and kidnapping, threatening and demanding money from a contractor earlier this week.

The arrested persons were S Venkatesh (34) from Bandlaguda in Nagole and Sheik Madeen Pasha (32) from Chinthapally in Nalgonda, who also posed as scribes of the vernacular news channel and extorted money from people.

Police said the two approached K Ravi, contractor of a construction site at Yacharam on Tuesday and posing as cops from the ‘Superintendent of Police Headquarters, Nalgonda, told him that he was booked in a drug-related offence and demanded Rs 1 lakh to free him from the case.

“They kidnapped him in a car and drove the car to various spots demanding money. When he agreed to pay Rs 60,000, they left him at the construction site asking him to send money through e-wallet and fled the spot,” police said, adding that based on Ravi’s complaint, the Yacharam police booked a case and with the help of technical evidence, nabbed the two.
