2nd T20I: Rohit and boys look to clinch series in Ranchi

Published

on

Having kicked off the T20I series with a win over New Zealand at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, India will now be aiming to ride on that momentum and clinch the three-match T20I series in Ranchi on Friday.

Eyes will be on JSCA International Stadium for the penultimate T20I match of the series as Kiwis would give themselves a chance to fashion a comeback. India’s first game under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid ended with a win, though not without some drama. Chasing 165 for the win, India were in command for three-fourth of the game but faltered in the death. New Zealand made a spirited comeback in the game but fell short eventually as the home side got the win with two balls and five wickets remaining.

The visitors will hope to continue that spirited performance of the death in the remaining parts of the match. It was the slowish start that cost them dearly and Kiwis will definitely work on that before entering the field on Friday. For India, the return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar to form was a relief to many, while Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav gave a glimpse of their ferocious hitting prowess when back on home soil.

For the second T20I match, eyes will be also on Venkatesh Iyer to see if the all-rounder rolls his arm over or not. India will also take confidence from the fact that the Men in Blue had thrashed Kiwis 5-0 in New Zealand last year. It will also be interesting to know who is included in India’s playing XI for the second T20I with batters like Ruturaj Gaikwad eyeing to make a mark.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel and Mohd. Siraj.New Zealand squad: Tim Southee (captain), Daryl Mitchell, Martin Guptill, Tim Seifert, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Jimmy Neesham, Kyle Jamieson, Todd Astle, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson, and Trent Boult.

‘Dravid won’t leave much to chance, he’ll be about preparation and process’

Published

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that it is too early for him to comment on Rahul Dravid’s coaching style, but he is sure that the head coach will be big on preparation and process.

Rahul Dravid’s coaching stint got off to a winning start as Rohit Sharma-led India defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the first T20I. “It’s too early for me to comment on Rahul Dravid’s coaching style, we need to give him breathing space. He’s put the hard yards in through the U-19 level etc. He won’t leave much to chance, and he’ll be all about preparation and process, so that we can bring the happiness back into the Indian dressing room,” Ashwin told host broadcaster Star Sports after the first T20I ended.

Suryakumar Yadav (62) and Rohit (48) starred with the bat as India chased down 165 to defeat New Zealand by five wickets in the first T20I of the three-match series here at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Earlier, Martin Guptill and Mark Chapman played knocks of 70 and 63 respectively as New Zealand posted a total of 164/6. For India, Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned with two wickets each.

“The slower you bowled, there was more purchase you got on this pitch. If you hit the seam and tossed it up, it did do things like Santner showed in the second innings. It’s tricky in T20s, you can’t miss your lengths and you don’t know when to toss it up but here it did help to give it some air. It was a slightly under-par score and we thought 170-180 would be par. We thought we would cruise home around the 15th over, but that’s T20 cricket for you,” said Ashwin.

New Zealand batter Mark Chapman admitted that the guys in his side are tired after playing a game just two days after the T20 World Cup final but he also accepted the challenges of international cricket in today’s age.

Suryakumar Yadav (62) and Rohit Sharma (48) starred with the bat as India chased down 165 to defeat New Zealand by five wickets in the first T20I of the three-match series here at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. “The guys been a little bit tired, but we always play for New Zealand with pride. Particularly for myself and Todd, who have been on the sidelines, it was a really exciting moment to be playing,” said Chapman after the game.

“To be honest, it was just nice to be out there. Had a lot of training behind the scenes, but nothing beats the real thing of being out in the middle,” he added.Martin Guptill and Mark Chapman played knocks of 70 and 63 respectively as New Zealand posted a total of 164/6. For India, Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned with two wickets each.

“In World Cups, you play your best XI and if we’re going well, then more than likely you stick with your best team. So it just meant that I was on the sidelines for a bit. I did my best to support the guys in and around training,” said Chapman.“You find ways to add context to your training. Obviously, being in and around this environment, you try and train the best you can given the situation and make the most of the opportunities to train. There was a lot of training in the background. I felt prepared, but I guess match-preparation wise it wasn’t ideal. But just happy to be out there,” he added.
