Three farm laws to be repealed: Prime Minister

Supreme Court had stayed the implementation and ordered the formation of a committee

Subsequent to the Supreme Court's stay in implementation of Farm Laws early this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the government has decided to repeal three farm laws.

The decision to withdraw the contentious farm laws was announced by the Prime Minister on the occasion of Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev.

Informing that the procedure for the same had already been set in motion, the Prime Minister said, the process would be completed in the Winter Session of the Parliament starting at the end of this month.

He maintained that his government had always worked for the benefit of farmers, particularly small farmers, and would continue to do the same.

The three farm laws are - Farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance & Farm Services Act 2020, Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act and Amendment to Essential Commodities Act.

The Farm Acts were challenged before the apex court. Consequently, the court had ordered the formation of a committee to hear all the parties and stakeholders and submit a report. The Committee had submitted its report in March.

Farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh have been protesting for more than a year against these laws.

Besides petitions challenging the laws, there were also many petitions before the Supreme Court against the farmers blockading the roads outside Delhi.

Citizens whose commute to the National Capital was affected due to the road blockade filed these petitions.
