Chennai, Nov 18 (UNI) The Depression over southwest bay of bengal off North
Tamil Nadu coast moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 23 kmph, will reach
the TN coast and cross the coast between Chennai and Puducherry tomorrow
morning.
Met office sources said it lay centred over southwest bay of bengal off North Tamil
Nadu coast about 250 km south-southeast of Chennai, 220 km east-south east of
Puducherry and 210 km east-northeast of Karaikal.
It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Tamil Nadu
and South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Chennai early
tomorrow morning.
Under its influence light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very
heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places will
occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
Thunderstorm with scattered heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely heavy
rain is likely to occur over Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Chengalpattu,
Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Salem, Tirupattur, Vellore,
Ranipet and delta districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas.
Met office has issued red alert to 16 districts.
Thunderstorm with heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places
over Ariyalur, Perambalur, Namakkal, Erode, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri
districts of Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur at
isolated places over Tiruchirapalli, Karur, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris and
Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. Moderate rain is also
likely to occur at most places over rest of the districts of Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorm with heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places
over Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem,
Erode, Namakkal, Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts. Thunderstorm with heavy
rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Kallakurichi, Villupuram,
Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Chennai districts, while light to moderate rain is
also likely to occur at most places over rest of the districts of Tamil Nadu,
Puducherry and Karaikal areas.
Since met office has forecast heavy rains schools and colleges have been
declared a holiday for tomorrow in seven districts so far.
The State government has asked the respective district collectors to decide
on declaring holiday for educational institutions tomorrow depending on the
situation.
Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph is likely to
prevail over southwest and adjoining west-central bay of bengal and along
and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra coasts during the next
24 hrs and decrease gradually thereafter.
Sea conditions will be rough to very rough and fishermen were advised not
to venture into these areas for fishing.
Local Cautionary Signal Number three has been hoisted in Chennai, Cuddalore,
Nagapattinam, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry, Karaikal and Pamban ports.
Meanwhile, incessant rains, accompanied by strong winds lashed Chennai
city, suburbs and southern districts leaving several areas waterlogged.
The Tamil Nadu government has geared up its machinery to meet the rain
situation and has opened control rooms for the benefit of public.
Relief centres have also been opened in several districts to house people
from low lying areas.
