Gurgaon: A man claiming to be a qualified doctor has been
booked for allegedly carrying out abortions illegally in
New Colony area. The case has been registered on the
complaint of the medical department.
The accused, Jitender, had studied till Class 12 and was practising as a doctor at Shree Shyam Medical Store near street number 9 in Mandanpuri area, police said. He was allegedly aiding pregnancy termination by providing kits for aborting the foetus.
Acting on the information received, Gurgaon civil surgeon Virender Yadav constituted a team on Tuesday comprising Dr Pradeep Kumar, nodal officer (PNDT Act), Dr Harish (medical officer) and Dr Neetu Gupta, lead medical officer.
For the raid, a couple was arranged as decoy. The two went to Jitender’s store and told him they did not want children and needed treatment. He allegedly provided them with a medical termination pack (MTP) and explained the procedure on how to use it for abortion of pregnancy. While buying the kit, the decoy couple handed him marked notes and soon thereafter, signalled to the team of the medical department.
When the team asked Jitender to show his medical certificates, he confessed he did not have the qualification. He had cleared his Class 12 exams and had been practising since the past four years and aiding illegal pregnancy termination by selling kits for the past six months. The medical store, the team found, was registered in another person’s name, to whom Jitender was paying monthly charges.
Jitender was booked under relevant sections of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, Indian Medical Council Act and the Drugs and Cosmetic Act at New Colony police station, said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
Dr Pradeep Kumar, deputy civil surgeon, said they successfully conducted a raid and exposed the
quack. “He was illegally providing MTP kits to pregnant women and endangering their lives,” he added.
