Kochi: A special team of the Crime Branch led by SP Biji George will now investigate the car accident that killed two models on 1 November.
The development came after the police investigation team arrested Roy J. Vayalatin, the owner of the hotel and five of its staff members where the DJ party took place before the accident on Wednesday night.
Vayalatin was arrested after telling police that the CCTV hard drive containing the party’s footage had been destroyed.
While Ancy Kabeer (25) and Anjana Shajan (24) died instantly in the accident, a third person, Ashiq, died a few days later from his injuries and Abdul Rahman, who was driving the car, the only witness left.
Rahman is currently out of hospital, but police arrested him on a charge of ‘involuntary manslaughter’.
Although the investigation team recovered the hard drive of the CCTV footage at the hotel, it could not get any footage of the party, raising the suspicion of a foul play.
After a few days of investigation, the police team learned that there was an exchange of words during the party. Before things could take an ugly turn, the young people left the hotel.
According to sources, Rahman was driving under the influence of alcohol.
It was on the way back that the car, after hitting a two-wheeled car, lost control and turned turtle.
However, police found that there was a vehicle behind the car transporting the two women. During interrogation, the driver said that the victims’ car was being driven at an extremely high speed.
According to reports, the driver of the car that was following the other car called and informed the hotel owner about the accident.
Meanwhile, the police team asked all those present in the party to come forward to record their statement which did not help as many of the participants were unregistered.
Those who registered are now summoned.
In another related development, the person who followed the fatal car Saiju on Thursday approached the court to expect bail because he fears being arrested.
