The Nordic region’s biggest economy removed most restrictions and recommendations in late September, and has so far opted against renewed measures, even as parts of Northern Europe have seen registered cases soar to record levels.

While Swedish hospitalizations are far from previous peaks, a 22% increase in the past month has authorities concerned that developments in Sweden will follow that of other European countries. As the continent has once again become a hot-spot for virus transmission, Germany is preparing tougher measures, Austria has introduced curbs for unvaccinated people and the Netherlands implemented a partial lockdown.

The Swedish government has scheduled a joint news conference with the health agency at 3:20 p.m. local time.
