FIVE MILITANTS, including a top commander of The Resistance Front (TRF), were killed in two separate gunfights in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Wednesday.

According to police, TRF commander Afaq Sikander, who joined militancy last year, and another militant were killed during an operation in Gopalpora village. The TRF is a shadow group of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), according to the police.

Following inputs about presence of militants in the village, a joint team of police, Army and the paramilitary forces cordoned off Gopalpora in the afternoon. As the forces zeroed in on the target, the hiding militants opened fire and tried to break the security cordon. Two militants were killed in retaliatory fire.

“Terrorist commander of proscribed terror outfit TRF Afaq Sikander killed in encounter,” the police tweeted later. The other militant who was killed in the encounter has not been identified yet.

In a separate encounter, three militants were killed at Pombay village, less than 2 km from Gopalpora, during a similar cordon and search operation by a joint team. The police are yet to identify the slain militants.
