Delhi Congress stages protest against Delhi govt's new liquor policy

New Delhi, Nov 17 (UNI) The Delhi Congress on Wednesday held protests outside liquor shops across the national capital, as the new liquor policy kicks in.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Anil Kumar blamed the Delhi government of enforcing a liberalized Excise Policy by opening liquor vends in every ward of Delhi to allow a free flow of liquor and mislead the youth, at a time when unemployment rate in Delhi has risen to an all-time high of 41 per cent.

"The Delhi Congress will oppose this with all its might," he said.

Congress workers held protests outside new liquor vends today, as the new Excise Policy set in.

Kumar said Congress workers will intensify their protests through the ongoing 'Pol Khol Yatra', to carry forward the message that while people were struggling and suffering due to unemployment and the devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The Kejriwal Government, without extending any help to the people, was fattening its exchequer by earning over Rs 9,000 crore from the auction of new liquor vends, and in the process, collecting crores in kickbacks from the liquor mafia," Kumar said.

Under a new excise policy that came into effect on Wednesday, under which around 850 new liquor shops will open in Delhi. Delhi government has also shut down over 600 government run liquor shops in the national capital with the new excise policy coming in force.
