On Tuesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced today that South Africa will co-host the Men’s World Cup 2027, together with Namibia and Zimbabwe.
It's the first time since 2003 that South Africa will host the prestigious tournament.
On that occasion, they were co-hosts along with Kenya and Zimbabwe with the World Cup final, played at the Wanderers won by Australia who defeated India.
“I would like to thank the ICC and its committees for awarding us the honours to be the host of the greatest game in the world," said Pholetsi Moseki, acting CEO at Cricket South Africa (CSA).
"This means a great deal for the sport of cricket in South Africa and indeed the legacy project.
We are looking forward to the many nuggets that will arise from our hosting of this great gentlemen’s game and we are certain that the three countries involved will benefit immensely,” he added.
Lawson Naidoo, chairperson of the CSA board said the news wasn't only good for South Africa, but the African continent too
“This is great news for cricket in South Africa and indeed the entire African continent," said Naidoo.
"CSA had submitted a compelling bid for the Men’s World Cup to return to our shores and for Africa to again enjoy the sporting, social and economic benefits of hosting this prestigious world cricket event.
"We are delighted that through this tournament the world will get a view of the abundance of talent that abounds in this beautiful part of the world."
The exact dates for the tournament are yet to be finalized.
