GREATER NOIDA: A 22-year-old law student suffering from anal fistula alleged he was operated upon by a quack after which his condition deteriorated. The patient, currently admitted to Delhi’s Apollo hospital for the past one month, could lose a part of his rectum, with doctors saying he may require three or four operations.
Jitendra Prakash, who is originally from Aligarh’s Khair, said he first started feeling pain and discomfort in 2020. His brother-in-law suggested that he visit a “doctor” named Vinay in Jewar. “He diagnosed anal fistula five months ago and asked me to arrange Rs 20,000, which I had to borrow from relatives,” Prakash said.
Vinay gave him anaesthesia for the operation and after two hours, Prakash was told the surgery was successful and he would not face any issue. However, the pain recurred and his condition turned serious.
In October, Prakash visited Self-Health Care Centre in Aligarh where doctors diagnosed him with ‘complex anal fistula’ and referred him to a bigger facility.
“They said the problem had aggravated and they could not treat me. When I made Vinay speak to the doctors, he claimed he had operated upon me three-four years ago and that I did not have this problem back then. I shouted at him and said he had spoiled my life,” he said.
Prakash alleged that when he threatened to complain against Vinay, the latter passed casteist remarks against him. Prakash said he went on to complain to UP health minister Jai Pratap Singh and Jewar police. “The health minister directed that an inquiry be conducted,” he added. After an investigation by the ACMO on the CMO’s recommendation, an FIR was lodged against Vinay under sections 15 (2) and 15 (3) of the Indian Medical Council Act and sections 269 and 338 of the IPC.
Jewar SHO Umesh Bahadur said the sections under which the FIR was lodged will constitute a maximum imprisonment for three years. “The FIR has been lodged on the directions of the CMO’s office,” he added.
