Coronavirus Variants and Vaccinations, Coronavirus Active Cases in India Today’s News, November 16 Live Updates: As the Covid-19 situation improves in the country, India has allowed quarantine-free entry for foreign travellers from 99 countries almost 20 months after restrictions were imposed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. These countries have agreed to mutual recognition of Covid-19 vaccination certificates with India. According to the latest guidelines issued by the Union Health Ministry, travellers from these nations which have been listed under “Category A” need to submit a self-declaration form on the Air Suvidha portal —newdelhiairport.in — before the scheduled travel, apart from uploading a negative RT-PCR report. However, countries currently considered to be “at risk” by India, which means the travellers from where would need to follow additional measures on arrival including testing, are the UK, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Singapore.
Meanwhile, India reported 8,865 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, the lowest in 287 days, taking its overall tally of Covid-19 cases to 3,44,56,401, while the number of active cases in the country declined to 1,30,793, the lowest in 525 days, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday. With 197 fresh fatalities, the Covid-19 death toll surged to 4,63,852, the Health Ministry said. The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been below 20,000 for the past 39 days and less than 50,000 for 142 consecutive days now. The active cases now comprise 0.38% of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate improved to 98.27%, the highest since March 2020, the ministry said. With the increasing pace of vaccination, the overall Covid-19 scenario in the country has improved. Even after the festivals, no major spike has been reported.
However, globally coronavirus is surging again, though in some countries. China is battling the Delta variant. It has locked down one university campus as Covid-19 cases spiked and imposed restrictions in several parts of the country. Australia has locked down unvaccinated people. Russia has been reporting a record number of fresh coronavirus infections for the past few days.

Drugmaker Pfizer Inc. has signed a deal with a U.N.-backed group to allow other manufacturers to make its experimental VOID-19 pill, a move that could make the treatment available to more than half of the world's population. In a statement issued Tuesday, Pfizer said it would grant a license for the antiviral pill to the Geneva-based Medicines Patent Pool, which would let generic drug companies produce the pill for use in 95 countries, making up about 53% of the world's population. The deal excludes some large countries that have suffered devastating coronavirus outbreaks. For example, while a Brazilian drug company could get a license to make the pill for export to other countries, the medicine could not be made generically for use in Brazil. Doctors Without Borders said it was “disheartened” that the Pfizer deal does not make the drug available to the entire world, noting that the agreement announced Tuesday also excludes countries including China, Argentina and Thailand. Fewer than 1% of Pfizer's COVID-19 shots have gone to poorer countries. (AP)
Ukraine reported record daily COVID-19 deaths Tuesday as authorities struggle to boost the country's vaccination rate amid rising coronavirus infections. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised Monday to pay 1,000 hryvnias ($38) to each Ukrainian who gets vaccinated. The government plans to allocate 3 billion hryvnias ($113.8 million) to the incentive programme this year and the same amount in 2022. Ukraine reported 838 more deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the pandemic death toll in the country of about 41 million residents to 77,985. Although Ukraine has four coronavirus vaccines available -- Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Sinovac -- only 19.8 per cent of the population has been vaccinated so far, one of the lowest rates in Europe. Authorities have blamed the recent surge in new cases on widespread public reluctance to get vaccinated. (AP)

If someone loses their livelihood due to the vaccine administered by the State, is the government not duty bound to redress his grievance? the Kerala High Court asked the Centre on Tuesday. The poser came during the hearing of a man's plea for a third jab of an internationally recognised vaccine so that he can go back to Saudi Arabia, where he was working as a welder prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. He has moved the high court for a third jab of an internationally recognised vaccine as the two doses of COVAXIN he received is not recognised or approved in the Gulf nation and therefore, he is unable to travel there. Justice P V Kunhikrishnan on Tuesday said that the court was not blaming the Centre, but when a citizen stands to lose his employment or his movement is restricted due to the vaccine administered to him by the State, then "does the government not have a duty to redress his grievance"? The court directed the Assistant Solicitor General (Asst SG) Manu S, appearing for the Centre, to take instructions on why Saudi Arabia was not recognising COVAXIN when the vaccine has been approved for international emergency use by WHO. The Asst SG said that the vaccines were administered to save lives which was the focus during the pandemic and therefore, the Centre could not wait for international acceptance of the same. He also said that the government has its limitations with regard to imposing something on a foreign nation. The court, however, said that restriction of movement or loss of employment of a citizen due to a vaccine administered by the State was 'infringement of his Fundamental Rights". (PTI)
People taking a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were significantly less likely to die of COVID-19 than those who did not use the medicine, a large analysis of health records from 87 health care centers across the US has found. The findings, published in the journal JAMA Network Open on Monday, add to a body of evidence indicating that SSRIs may have beneficial effects against the worst symptoms of COVID-19, although large randomised clinical trials are needed to prove this. "We can't tell if the drugs are causing these effects, but the statistical analysis is showing significant association," said Marina Sirota, an associate professor at University of California (UC) San Francisco, US. The team, including researchers from Stanford University in the US, analysed electronic health records from the Cerner Real World COVID-19 de-identified database, which had information from almost 500,000 patients across the US. This included 83,584 adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between January and September, 2020. Of those, 3,401 patients were prescribed SSRIs. The large size of the dataset enabled researchers to compare the outcomes of patients with COVID-19 on SSRIs to a matched set of patients with disease who were not taking them. (PTI)

Two billion doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine have been supplied worldwide, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker and its partner said on Tuesday, in just under a year since its first approval. The shot, which is the biggest contributor to the COVAX vaccine sharing scheme backed by the World Health Organization, is being made in 15 countries for supply to more than 170 countries, London-listed AstraZeneca and Oxford University said in a joint statement.AstraZeneca in June last year signed on India's Serum Institute, the world's biggest manufacturer of vaccines by volume, to help double the vaccine's manufacturing capacity to two billion doses. The ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 shot, sold under the brand names Vaxzevria and Covishield, has faced challenges around efficacy data, supplies and links to rare blood clots. AstraZeneca last week said as the world learns to live with the coronavirus which causes COVID-19, it would begin to earn a modest profit from the shot after having made a commitment to sell it at cost during the pandemic. The company's chief executive officer, Pascal Soriot, however, reassured that low-income countries would continue to receive vaccines on a non-profit basis. A Houston hospital has temporarily suspended a doctor for spreading false information about COVID-19 to her patients and on social media. Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, an ear, nose and throat specialist who runs a private practice in River Oaks, had been granted provisional privileges at Houston Methodist Hospital within the last year. The hospital revoked Bowden's hospital privileges on Friday citing "unprofessional behavior," including vulgar language on social media, as the main reason for suspension, the Houston Chronicle reported. On her Twitter account, Bowden repeatedly decried vaccine mandates and promoted the unproven benefits of ivermectin, the anti-parasitic drug that federal health officials advise against using to treat the virus. In emails obtained by the Chronicle, Bowden was urging against vaccinations for children and telling her patients that data she has collected "suggests that the vaccine is not working." "Dr. Mary Bowden, who recently joined the medical staff at Houston Methodist Hospital, is using her social media accounts to express her personal and political opinions about the COVID-19 vaccine and treatments," Houston Methodist said in a statement.
