The UK is currently auctioning Tipu Sultan’s throne finial at a price of £1.5 million, or Rs 14,98,64,994 (14 crores 98 lakh 64 thousand and nine hundred ninety-four) which it stole from India.
A gold tiger head listed as ‘Throne Finial’ which once belonged to the throne of Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan in the 18th century India, was on Friday placed under a temporary export ban in order to find the United Kingdom buyer for it.
The finial, also known as the crowning ornament is one of the eight gold tiger heads that adorned the throne of the ruler, famously known as the “Tiger of Mysore.” The British government has put this finial under an export ban so that it gives time for the UK gallery or institution to acquire the piece of historic value.
The UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport tweeted, “A £1.5 million throne finial is at risk of leaving the UK.” To allow time for an organisation or individual to buy the Tipu Sultan Throne finial, an export bar has been imposed on it. According to Lord Stephen Parkinson, UK Arts Minister, this magnificent finial depicts the history of Tipu Sultan’s rule and prompts us to explore our colonial history.” “I hope a buyer from the United Kingdom comes forward so that we can all learn more about this pivotal event in our shared history with India,” he added.
The finial, made of gold and set with rubies, emeralds and diamonds, is considered a rare example of fully documented 18th century South Indian goldsmiths’ work. among the five surviving finials, its marble pedestal is unique and the meaning of its gold inscription is still a mystery.
Tipu Sultan was regarded as the greatest threat to the British East India Company until his defeat and death in 1799.
