Imphal, November 13 2021: In an election, only those candidates accepted by the people will win the elections.
There is no need to form groups, restrict entry of candidates and flame unnecessary violence.
Thus, Thanga AC MLA Tongbram Robindro said that any candidate is free to campaign in his locality, including his home for the polls.
Addressing a press meet held at his Khagempalli residence here on Saturday, MLA T Robindro observed the differences and changes in the way elections were held in the past and at present.
In the past, there was no instance of enmity or poll-related violence.
However, the same cannot be said for the present times, with the existence of the trends of extreme groupism, restriction/probation on entry of candidates, etc, which is basically making a joke of democracy.
Recounting an "entry-prohibited" incident which happened to him on Friday, wherein a Meira Paibi member named Memma reportedly prevented him from entering Keibul Takmu Leikai despite receiving an invitation from one Haobijam Maingou Devi of the locality; the MLA expressed his regret over experiencing such restriction in a democractic system of governance.
He then informed that a report has been made against Memma to the Keibul Lamjao PS and expressed belief that the authority concerned will take appropriate action in the matter.
Robindro continued that all eligible citizens have the right to vote for the candidate they prefer.
Thus, he said that there is no qualms of other candidates coming to campaign at his locality or at his home, including holding meetings.
However, it needs to be considered that the aforementioned behaviour of groupism, could lead to unwanted unrest in Keibul, he remarked.
"A candidate carries out his/her campaign for the polls to inform the people about the works he/she wants to do.
The CM has already made an appeal to all concerned stop such acts and thus, it is unfortunate for such incidents to keep happening again and again", the MLA said.
Robindro then urged for conducting the upcoming election in a peaceful manner and preventing poll violence.
