AgenciesNew Delhi: Ahead of the proposed December 6 India-Russia summit here, Russia has started supplying S-400 components to India as part of a $5.2-billion deal for five squadrons. The first squadron will be in place by 2021-end.
"The supplies of the S-400 air defence system to India have started and are proceeding on schedule," Dmitry Shugaev, director of Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation told news agency Sputnik. FMSTC is Russia's main defence export organisation.
The system is equipped with four different missiles which can engage aircraft, ballistic missiles and AWACS planes at 400 km, 250 km, 120 km and 40 km. Indian defence personnel and Air Force officers have undergone S-400-related training in Russia.
ET has further learnt that Russia is also planning to offer S-500 (an advanced version of S-400) system to India as well. Notwithstanding the threats of US sanctions under CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act), there has been steady progress on the S-400 front after the contract was signed in 2018. When defence minister Rajnath Singh visited Moscow last year, he was assured by his hosts of supply of the first squadron by 2021-end.
