Paris Hilton Leads Online Joy Over End of Britney Spears Conservatorship
A number of celebrities have taken to social media to welcome the ending of the conservatorship of singer Britney Spears.
Spears' father, Jamie Spears had asked in February 2008 to put his daughter under conservatorship after she was placed on two involuntary psychiatric holds.
In courtroom testimony in June, Spears said the arrangement, usually reserved for the very ill or old, was abusive and deprived her of basic rights.
But on Friday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny ruled a termination of the conservatorship.
After the ruling which was hailed by the #FreeBritney movement who had campaigned for her release, the 39-year-old star wrote on Instagram "I love my fans so much, it's crazy!!!" Spears wrote. "I think I'm gonna cry the rest of the day!!!! Best day ever..."

Her fiancé Sam Asghari wrote on Instagram: "History was made today," "Britney is Free!"
Paris Hilton was among other celebrities who weighed in with messages of support as the FreeBritney hashtag buzzing around social media over the last few months was swapped for the past tense.
"You're the most resilient, kind and inspiring soul. We all love you so so much! Your best days are yet to come! #FreedBritney," Hilton tweeted, sharing a picture of the pair together.

But NOW we have to protect her from the paparazzi and tabloid media who are determined to drive her back into this same mess, by harassing and stalking her. We have to now PROTECT BRITNEY. https://t.co/Rifd2prnir

Star of the TV series, The Good Place, Jameela Jamil tweeted. "You guys freed Britney!!!! But NOW we have to protect her from the paparazzi and tabloid media who are determined to drive her back into this same mess..."
Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace posted an image of the pair together, writing on Instagram, "Freedom is a human right. My heart is smiling for you, Britney. Congratulations on your regained and deserved emancipation."
Other messages of support were more succinct, such as TV host Andy Cohen who tweeted: "Britney: Free," and pop singer Cyndi Lauper writing, "Congrats @britneyspears!" while singer Jeff Timmons said: "Long overdue!"

While the conservatorship is terminated, Spears's lawyer Mathew Rosengart accepted a temporary conservator will have some limited administrative powers.
John Zabel, a certified public accountant, was appointed temporary conservator in September and retains some powers such as being able to transfer assets to the Spears estate and execute "supplemental" decisions on its behalf.
