Mumbai news updates: City reports over 200 new Covid-19 cases

Mumbai reported 247 Covid-19 cases on Saturday and two deaths, taking the case tally to 7,59,328 and toll to 16,290. The city’s recovery rate is 97% with 7,37,671 recoveries. Also, 143 persons were arrested in an all out operation conducted by the police in Thane city. At least 126 police officers and 684 personnel took part in the operation that was carried out in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. A magistrate’s court on Saturday remanded dismissed police official Sachin Waze, to Crime Branch custody till Monday. The Crime Branch had said that the investigation into the complaint of businessman Bimal Agarwal, had brought to light that former city police commissioner Param Bir Singh started the extortion racket immediately after Waze was reinstated in service in 2020. Security beefed after railway police at Bandra received call from a Dubai man warning of a bomb blast

Security was beefed up after the railway police at Bandra railway station received a call from an unidentified person warning of a bomb attack in Mumbai city late on Saturday. The caller made the call on the landline number at the Bandra railway police station at around 6.40 pm from one Jitesh Bhatia who resides in Dubai. Though the railway police found out that the caller is of “unsound mind”. Full story here

Mumbai: Crime Branch moves court against 'absconding accused' Param Bir Singh

The Crime Branch has moved a plea before the magistrate’s court seeking issuance of proclamation against absconding accused, former city police commissioner Param Bir Singh and two others, Vinay Singh and Chhota Shakeel aide Riyaz Bhatti , in an alleged extortion case. The Crime Branch said that a non bailable warrant was earlier issued by the court but the trio failed to appear. Searches at their homes also did not yield results. Full story here
