Imphal, November 11 2021: The 48 hours economic blockade along NH-37 imposed by Joint Tribe Students' Association (JTSA) in protest against an incident on Thursday at Chingkham Kabui village in Thoubal district has been called off.
The blockade which begun from 4pm on Thursday was called off after chief minister N Biren Singh intervened and DGP LM Khaute held talk with the agitators, a statement of JTSA said, adding that the incident at Chingkham Kabui village triggered by some people under the aegis of Lilong Chingkham Maya Development Organisation was very unfortunate.
The meeting with DGP arrived at an understanding and accordingly relaxed the blockade with immediate effect, it said.
The meeting held at Nungba headquarters and attended by leaders of JTSA, RNCM, RNLPM and NAVAA decided to suspend the agitation launched in connection with Chingkham Kabui village incident.
The meeting also lauded the initiative taken by the government and appealed to the government to convert assurance given into action at the earliest.
The association also thanked IG (LO) Jayenta, SP Thoubal Jogeschandra Haobijam, OC Lilong PS inspector Md Riyaz for timely intervention and controlling the situation.
The JTSA gave economic blockade call.in protest against vandalising of houses at Chingkham Kabui (Rongmei) village by members of Lilong Chingkham Maya Development Organisation (LCMDO).
While condemning LCMDO for its "illegal activities against the Rongmei (Kabui) villagers," JTSA demanded that the culprits of the crime committed against the minority community be booked within 24 hours as per the law of the land.
At the same time, the joint tribal body appealed to the state government to take stringent action against all individuals, leaders and organisation scheming to disturb the peaceful co-existence time and again.
Other demands raised by JTSA are speedy construction of the Chingkham police outpost, construction of fencing around Chingkham village to prevent encroachment on the village land in future, deployment of round-the-clock additional police personnel at Chingkham, and payment of compensation within one week for the houses and properties vandalised.
It also termed LCMDO's act against minority Rongmei as unacceptable and barbaric.
