New Delhi, November 12

The Supreme Court on Friday gave the Uttar Pradesh government time till Monday to carry out the suggestion of appointing either former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Ranjit Singh or Rakesh Kumar Jain for supervision of the SIT probe into Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Four farmers were mowed down in Lakhimpur Kheri. Angry farmers had then allegedly lynched three accused. A journalist was also killed.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, on behalf of the UP government, told the bench headed by CJI NV Ramana that the suggested appointment would be done by Monday.

The top court had earlier suggested appointment of a retired judge to infuse fairness, transparency and faith in the SIT's investigation.
