Hyderabad: Former Indian left-arm spinner SL Venkatapathy Raju has been recruited by Oman as a spin consultant for the World Cricket League 2, a tournament that forms part of the 2023 Cricket World Cup qualifying process. The former captain of Hyderabad will only be part of the support staff for this one-day World Cup qualifying league.
Oman, who played in the qualifiers and hosted the T20 World Cup, is playing against the UAE and is hosting Namibia starting from 24 November. Each team plays against each other twice.
“As the points are very important in this phase of this game, the team wanted a turn coach and they asked if I was available. “I just agreed to this tournament,” said the 52-year-old Raju.
Former Sri Lankan captain Dileep Mendis is the head coach while former Indian pace bowler Avishkar Salvi is the fast bowling coach. Raju will now join the Support Staff as turn coach.
“I have been to Oman in the past as part of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) program. They have some lovely terrain and infrastructure. “It’s nice to be with a young team like Oman,” Raju said.
