Treatz might offer the only self-serve frozen yogurt in the area, but the Port Huron shop is extending a warm welcome to the community after opening.

Treatz at 901 Erie St. held a soft opening for friends and family Wednesday afternoon. The owners, Port Huron couple Nina and Greg Kinney, said local excitement has been building as they’ve been getting closer to opening.

“We got people every day trying to come in,” Nina Kinney said.

Treatz has eight frozen yogurt machines with 16 different flavors to choose and twist, including the seasonal pumpkin pie, fresh coffee, salted caramel, cotton candy, chocolate, tropical banana and mountain ripe strawberry.

Unlike some frozen yogurt shops that charge by the ounce, Treatz has set prices for different sizes: $5 for small, $6 for medium and $7 for large. Each includes two pre-packaged topping choices, of which there are around 40 to choose from. Extra toppings can be purchased for 50 cents.

The shop also offers baked goods and food like macaroni and cheese, soft pretzels and hot pizza bagels.

The shop planned to open 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and is planning to host a grand opening ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday.

The owners said after the grand opening the shop will be open six days a week. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Nina Kinney said they wanted to offer lunch options while also staying open late enough on the weekends.

“We want to be the place all the cool kids come,” she laughed.

The building used to be bakery Betsy’s Bakes which closed in July after the owner decided to return to teaching. The Kinneys bought the former bakery in late August but have been planning the business since March.

The owners initially hoped to open in October, but Greg Kinney said it took longer than expected because a lot of things were on back order and they received final pieces for the shop this past weekend.

The couple think the shop is an opportunity to bring people to the area and the business offers a 10% discount for people who bring in Port Huron Prowlers tickets and for veterans and first responders.

And the business wants to be inclusive, with a wheelchair accessible entrance in the back and sugar substitute, dairy free and vegan friendly options, Nina Kinney said.

“This is a family experience,” she said. “We have something for everyone.”

Customers appreciated the varied options Wednesday, including Greg Kinney’s brother Ron Kinney of Fort Gratiot, who has diabetes.

Kinney served himself chocolate and coffee frozen yogurt with pecans during the soft opening. He said the area needed something like Treatz and it gives people a special treat in a warm and relaxing environment.

“It’s new, it’s unique,” he said. “They’ve done a really good job decorating in here.”

He thinks it will be a good place for kids to come spend a couple hours and with all the options someone could get something different every day.

Fort Gratiot resident Skyla Fowler, 17, said there aren’t a lot of places for younger people to hang out in the area so this could be another option for them.

She said Treatz looked really fun but was also very cozy. She is allergic to dairy so having a dairy free option gave her something new to try.

She was there with her mom, Alicia Fowler, who said she tried the dairy free option and it was “freaking awesome.”

Alicia Fowler encouraged people to come try the business, with frozen yogurt that “awakens your taste buds.”

“It’s delish, just get your butts down here,” she said.
