Ganja worth Rs 1 crore was seized near Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Telangana Department of Prohibition and Excise on Thursday seized ganja (marijuana) which is estimated to be worth Rs 1 crore in the Medchal district near Hyderabad.

An official said 462 kg of ganja being transported in two cars near Kowkur in Jawahar Nagar and four people were arrested.

David Ravikant, deputy commissioner for the excise of the Medchal district, told reporters that the smuggling was seized when it was transported from the Andhra-Odisha border area to Maharashtra.

Those arrested were identified as Mohammed Fareed, Ismail, Sachin Chawan and Baswa Raju. He said they had filed a case and were investigating further.

It is the latest in a series of seizures of ganja and other drugs by the excise and police in and around Hyderabad during the last few days.

The department launched an intensive campaign last month to combat the drug threat on behalf of Prime Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

The excise officers seized 4.92 kg of Mephedrone drug from three different locations in the Medchal Malkajgiri district on October 23.

On October 30, two drug dealers were arrested and 110 kg of ganja were seized in their possession in LB Nagar. The smuggling, valued at an estimated Rs 18.50 lakh, was transported from the agency area in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh to Nagpur via Hyderabad.

About 72 kg of ganja were seized earlier and four people were arrested by police in two different raids within the borders of the Hyderabad police commissioner.

Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Police, covering Hyderabad and suburbs, are conducting a special crackdown on drugs.
