ROHTAK: Nisha Dahiya (21), a city level wrestler, and her brother were shot allegedly by her coach, at the lone wrestling academy in their village Halalpur in Sonipat district on Wednesday.
Their mother Dhanpati Devi, who came to the academy to take her daughter home was also shot at by Pawan Kumar, who was in-charge of the village wrestling academy. She is being treated at PGIMS, Rohtak, and her condition is stated to be critical. The duo’s father, Dayanand, is posted with the CRPF in Jammu and Kashmir.
The villagers Pawan runs a franchise of the wrestling academy owned by wrestler Sushil Kumar. Sources said Pawan first shot Nisha, who had been practising at the academy for about three years. He then called Dhanpati, saying she can come to take Nisha as her practice time was over, and Suraj and shot at them. While Suraj died on the spot, Dhanpati was seriously injured. The accused, who belongs to a Rohtak village, fled from the spot with the CCTV footage of the wrestling academy. A team from Kharkhodda police station later reached the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem to civil hospital, Sonipat. Sonipat. Nisha and Suraj were declared dead while Dhanpati was referred to PGI Rohtak.
Sonipat ASP Mayank Gupta told media that Nisha and her brother was shot by her coach Pawan Kumar who used to run wrestling academy. He added that the deceased Nisha should not be confused with national wrestling player namesake Nisha Dahiya, the former was a local wrestler.
Police said their teams were searching the whereabouts of the accused after registration of FIR under relevant sections. Sources said angry villagers vandalised and torched the wrestling academy after the shocking incident earlier in the day. Sonipat SP Rahul Sharma said Kumar was a resident of Baland village in Rohtak district. He was married in Sonipat’s Halalpur village. Police said that different teams were on the job to arrest the accused.
