Samajwadi Party (SP) activists stage a protest against the visit of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath to flag off Kanpur Metro trial run, in Kanpur
KANPUR: Ahead of the arrival of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the SP activists created ruckus in Rawatpur. SP workers said that the Metro project had been started by former CM Akhilesh Yadav. They alleged that the BJP government was claiming it as its own.
Anticipating the protest, security forces had been deployed at the residences and offices of the opposition parties and leaders.
The police put SP MLA Amitabh Bajpai under house arrest at his Sarvodaya Nagar residence while PSPL president Ashish Chaubey at the city office located in Ashok Nagar.
SP and PSPL had called for a protest near the Metro trial venue. In order to foil their plans, all entry points had been barricaded. A large number of policemen had been deployed in and around the area.
Led by SP city vice-president, Narendra Singh alias Pintu Thakur, a group of SP activists reached Rawatpur Metro depot, Gurudev Metro Station, where they protested by holding a symbolic inauguration of the Metro service. They also released black balloons. The police did not allow the protesters to reach the venue.
