Samsung has announced the industry's first LPDDR5X DRAM meant for smartphones and beyond. It is a successor to the current industry-standard LPDDR5 DRAM which was also debuted by the South Korean tech giant in 2018. As one would expect, the newer version will make devices even faster and more efficient than ever.
The new Samsung LPDDR5X DRAM has been developed using the 14-nanometer fabrication technology. It is a 16Gb chip that can be stacked in a configuration up to 64GB. The company is claiming is that it is capable of offering over 1.3x faster processing speeds (up to 8.5 gigabits per second) while consuming 20% less power at the same time. The figures are obviously in comparison to the LPDDR5 RAM.
There is no doubt that the new DRAM will power almost all of the future premium and high-end smartphones. Samsung says that it will go beyond the realm of smartphone usage and power a wide range of new technology devices. It is aiming to strengthen devices meant for 5G and AI applications along with metaverse.
Samsung is yet to reveal when we can expect new LPDDR5X RAM-powered commercial devices to hit the market. There is a good possibility that the upcoming Galaxy S22 series might be the first smartphone lineup but nothing is confirmed yet.

Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles.”
