Which Banks are Closed on Veterans Day?

Most banks are closed on Veterans Day, but with all companies, there may be some exceptions.

Private banks can choose whether or not to open, or even shorten opening hours, however, most banks choose to remain closed on federal holidays.

When Is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day takes place on the 11th day of the 11th month every year.

The first Veterans Day was held as Armistice Day in 1919, celebrating the Armistice with Germany a year after the First World War ended.

It was declared by President Woodrow Wilson, who declared: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory."

Congress passed a law to mark it as a legal holiday in 1938, but it did not remain as Armistice Day, however, for too long.

In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day after President Dwight Eisenhower signed a law to mark it.

The date of Veterans Day has also moved as well, with it being celebrated at the end of October during the 1970s.

However, in 1978 a bill was signed to observe the day on November 11, like other similar events around the world.

This bill was signed by President Gerald Ford, and marked the beginning of the holiday as we know it now.

Some other countries still maintain the name Armistice Day, which coincides with similar celebrations like Remembrance Day.
