In 2010, the American Humane Society recognized the former American Idol judge for her support of its Pets and Women's Shelters (PAWS) program, which helped remove barriers for women fleeing abusive relationships by finding housing for their pets.
Paula served as a spokesperson for the program, and similar efforts have sprung up in recent years.

Back in 2007, Reuters reported that Paula fell while trying to avoid stepping on one of her chihuahuas, breaking her nose and one of her toes in the process.
