NZ beat ENG Highlights: Kane Williamson’s New Zealand avenges 2019 WC defeat to enter FINAL, kicks England out of T20 World Cup

NZ beat ENG Highlights: T20 World Cup Semifinals: Kane Williamson’s New Zealand have avenged their 2019 WC final heartbreak by knocking Eoin Morgan’s England out of the T20 World by an emphatic 5 wickets victory in the first semi-final of T20 World Cup here in Abu Dhabi. Chasing 167 runs target, the Kiwis faced big blows in the early on and were under pressure for most of the run chase but Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 72-run knock aided by James Neesham’s quickfire cameo of 27 runs off just 11 balls helped New Zealand defeat England by five wickets to enter their maiden final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. New Zealand will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Pakistan and Australia in the summit clash on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium. NZ beat ENG– Highlights: Kane Williamson’s New Zealand avenges 2019 WC defeat to enter FINAL, kicks England out of T20 World Cup

Put into bat England posted a good total of 166/4 on the back of Moeen Ali’s fifty and Dawid Malan’s 46 in the first semi-final here in Abu Dhabi. With No Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow came up the order and started the innings with Jos Buttler. Both the openers added 37 runs for the first wicket before Adam Milne removed Bairstow in the sixth over to provide the first breakthrough to the Kiwis. Buttler and Malan steadied the innings before Ish Sodhi got rid of the in-form Joss Buttler. At the halfway mark, England’s score read 67/2 with Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali at the crease.

Malan and Ali then added 63 runs for the third wicket before Tim Southee removed dangerous-looking Dawid Malan on 42 in the 16th over. In the final three overs, England managed to add 36 more runs, taking their total past the 160-run mark as Moeen Ali slammed a fifty.

Coming to chase, New Zealand had a shaky start as Chris Woakes first removed Martin Guptill (4) in the very first over and then skipper Kane Williamson in the third over. At end of the powerplay, New Zealand’s score read 36/2.

Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell then added eighty-two runs partnership for third wickets and took the run chase ahead. At the halfway mark, New Zealand’s score read 58/2 with the side needing 109 runs to win from 60 balls.

The 82-run stand for the third wicket was finally broken by Liam Livingstone as he had Conway (46) stumped at the hands of Buttler with New Zealand still needing 72 runs to win from 38 balls. Glenn Phillips (2) was the second wicket for Livingstone and England was in firm control with New Zealand at 107/4 in the 16th over.

In the 17th over bowled by Chris Jordon, James Neesham and Mitchell managed to score 23 runs, and the match swayed in favour of the Kiwis, with New Zealand needing 34 to win from 18 balls.

However, another twist came in the game as Adil Rashid sent Neesham (27) back to the pavilion, and New Zealand required 20 to win from 12 balls.

In the end, Daryl Mitchell guided New Zealand to a five-wicket victory with six balls to spare, hitting back-to-back sixes off Chris Woakes’ over.

Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow will open the innings for England

@19:25 – It’s time for National Anthems.

@19:24 – Both teams observing a moment of silence for Abu Dhabi’s curator Mohan Singh who passed away earlier this week

@19:23 – Both teams are walking out to the ground for their respective National Anthems

England (Playing XI): Jos Buttler (w), Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan (c), Sam Billings, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

New Zealand (Playing XI): Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson (c), Devon Conway (w), Glenn Phillips, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult

Changes – England: Sam Billings comes in place of J Roy. Jonny Bairstow will pair up with J Buttler to open the innings

Changes – New Zealand: Same team.

Tim Southee: “It’s been a while since 2019, so we haven’t talked anything about it. It’s a different format for a start and a different group of guys. We are just excited to be here. You are into a tournament hoping to be here at the latter stages, hopefully, we can continue the form we have shown in the previous weeks. The experience of the guys, we were dealt with a blow early on with Lockie Ferguson ruled out. Having Adam Milne come in, hasn’t played a lot of international cricket in recent years, but he’s had a good season in England playing in the Hundred and County. It’s great to have some experience in the bowling unit. As a group, we have adapted to the conditions. All three grounds have offered different challenges and we’ve been able to assess that”

Eoin Morgan: “Roy misses out today, obviously he’s disappointed because he’s played a big role for us in this tournament, and to miss out on a semi-final is devastating. However, Billings gets another chance. He’s been doing the hardwork and carrying the drinks for us, and it’s a big opportunity for him. Bairstow will open today, instead of Roy, since he’s done it really well in the past. We can’t take New Zealand lightly at all, they’ve been playing semi-finals and finals for a lot longer than we have, so we’ll have to play out of our skins to beat them. Looking forward to a great contest today.”

Kane Williamson: “We’re bowling first. It’s a good pitch but a bit of dew later. We’re going in with the same team. Busy period for us, and we’ve come through, giving in good performances. The two most experienced bowlers have bowled beautifully throughout the tournament, and after Lockie, Milne has come in and done well too. England has a lot of depth, that’s their strength, and we have the opportunity to play our own brand of cricket to make it to the final.”

Toss Update: New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to bowl first.

T20 World Cup semi-final – ENG vs NZ Live: England topped Group 1 and knocked opponents South Africa out of the tournament last week. On the other hand, New Zealand sealed their place in the 2021 semi-finals in style courtesy of a comfortable eight-wicket win over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.

In the 2019 ODI World Cup final, the tournament witnessed a first-ever Super Over in which England defeated New Zealand to lift their maiden title on the basis of boundary countback rule at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The 50-over game between England and New Zealand ended in a tie and the teams then took the field for the Super Over.

In the Super Over, both teams managed to score 15 runs each but England was announced as the winner as they had hit more boundaries in the allotted overs.

In case semi-final games are tied, a Super Over will be played and if that also doesn’t help in deciding the winner then another Super Over shall be staged until there is a clear winner.

T20 World Cup semi-final – ENG vs NZ Live: As per ICC, after a tie, weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is abandoned or a no result, then the side that finished first in its Super 12s Group will progress to play the summit clash.

While New Zealand is coming on the back of a win in the semi-finals, England have their feet on the ground following a first defeat of the tournament last week.

England will be without the services of Jason Roy who was forced off with a calf injury having made 20 off 16 balls as England looked to chase down 189 in their last Super 12 stage match.
