BHUBANESWAR: Bowing down to pressure from protesting students, the Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, on Wednesday announced that it will reduce the hostel readmission fee of both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students of the institution.

Many UG and PG students gathered in front of the office of university vice-chancellor Sanjay Kumar Nayak and shouted slogans demanding the reduction of hostel readmission fees.

“Hostels were closed between April 19 and August 16 due to increasing Covid-19 cases in the state. We did not use any hostel facilities during that time. Hence, we request the university authorities to slash the hostel readmission fee,” said a PG second-year student from the university.

He said the hostel readmission fee was Rs 6000. “We were asked to deposit the amount, but we had requested the university authorities to reduce the fee. When they did not give any response, we staged a protest on Wednesday. But the warden of the hostels promised us to fulfil our demand,” he added.
The students called off the protest after discussing it with the warden of the hostels. Sources said the university has asked each student to deposit Rs 2800 instead of Rs 6000.

“We had promised the students to reduce the fee, but they suddenly came to stage a protest against the authorities. We were preparing to publish the notification. After our announcement, the students called off their strike within a few minutes,” said Asima Sahu, chairperson of PG Council of the university.
