  • The trailer for upcoming mockumentary Daryn's Gym has been released by eMedia streaming service, eVOD.
  • Newcomer Clifford Joshua Young takes the lead in the comedy, playing the role of naïve gym owner, Daryn Jnr.
  • The film, which has writer/director Brett Michael Innes at the helm, also stars Hlubi Mboya, Siv Ngesi, Natasha Sutherland and Deon Coetzee.

eVOD, eMedia's streaming service, has released the trailer for their upcoming film, Daryn's Gym, which sees writer/director Brett Michael Innes (Sink, Fiela se Kind) at the helm.

Newcomer Clifford Joshua Young takes the lead in the mockumentary, playing the role of Daryn Jnr - a young, naïve gym owner who is tasked with taking on the ruthless owner of a multi-national fitness centre to keep his business alive.

Speaking about getting the opportunity to play Daryn in the comedy, Clifford said it was life-changing.

"I've always wanted to work with Brett and having him walk this road with me was a dream come true. Playing Daryn Jnr has truly changed my life."

The film also stars Hlubi Mboya, Siv Ngesi, Natasha Sutherland and Deon Coetzee.

Stepping away from his hard-hitting dramas to take on this mockumentary, Brett said: "I loved the challenge of a new genre."

He added: "While I felt out of my depth at times, I chose to rely on my experience in drama so that we would always pursue truth over a punchline. And while I will always be drawn to complex narratives on the heavier side of life, a large part of this pivot to comedy came from recognising that lockdown has been tough on all of us and the last thing anyone wants to watch right now is a movie about pain.

"Much like Ted Lasso, I hope that the film leaves viewers feeling a little lighter when the credits start to roll."

Brett also worked alongside producer Paulo Areal (Ellen Pakkies) on the project.

Daryn's Gym will premiere at the South African Independent Film Festival on 25 November 2021, ahead of its nationwide release on eVOD in December this year.
