Imphal PS, SI Amarjit awarded for foiling gambling

Imphal, November 08 2021: Imphal police station bagged the award for confiscating largest number of dies and other materials used in dice gambling locally known as Lagao during Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festival while SI B Amarjit Sharma of Imphal West district commando was honoured with the award for highest haul of Lagao Maru among commando teams of the district police.
Prior to Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festival, Imphal West SP Dr S Ibomcha had announced that police stations and teams which manage to seize highest number of illegal dice materials will be awarded and the same have been presented at his office on Monday.
Among the police stations, Imphal police station managed to recov er 540 dies during a series of drive conducted against gambling before and during the festivals and accordingly bagged the first prize.
Patsoi PS with recovery of 500 dies secured the second prize while Wangoi PS was awarded the third prize with recovery of 372 dies.
A total of 2,022 dies were recovered by police stations of the district during the drive and 240 of them were recovered by Lamphel police station, 158 by Singjamei police station, 96 by Mayang Imphal police station, 71 by Lamsang police station, 53 by Sekmai police station and six by women police station.
Among the police teams which managed to seize highest number of dies was the team of SI B Amarjit Sharma of district police commando unit with 65 recoveries.
The team of SI L Shitaljit Singh with recovery of 28 dies and Jem A Sadananda with 25 dies bagged second and-third prizes respectively.
The teams of additional AP (LO) Th Shangkardeba and additional SP (IUCAW) Rattana Ngasepam too recovered eight and four dice sets respectively.
The first prize for both the categories included Rs 10,000 cash plus certificate while second and third prizes consisted of Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 in cash with certificates respectively.
During the festivals, the district police stations and police teams recovered a total of 3,602 dies and sets and some silencers of motorcycles.
All the recovered dies, sets and silencers were destroyed using a roller on Monday at the SP's office complex.
Regarding the drive and destruction of illegal dice, SP Dr S Ibomcha told media persons that playing of dice game locally known as Lagao before and during Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals attracts huge crowd and prone to fighting among groups.
In order to prevent skirmishes among people, district police appealed to people not to play dice game 15 days before the festivals and announced that police stations and teams which make largest haul of dies/sets will be awarded.
Accordingly, the police stations and teams which collected highest haul were honoured and encouraged on Monday, he added.
