I know a lot of the OV35 folks don't do IG or Tiktok but if you do, you will notice a lot of fitness folks (new generation) influencers/coaches are knocking compound movements and some are even saying they are more dangerous than affective.
Now I do understand there are some risks associated with flat BB bench, Squats, Deadlifts, over head press and bent Over Rows but to say these movements are useless in putting on overall size is beyond me.
Anyone else been in these types of discussions with other fitness folks outside of bb.com?

Don't use IG TikTok FB etc but it doesn't surprise me. There's been a fashion for a few years to return to compounds as they are "functional" (don't start me on that...), So if people want to be exciting and different right now they'll advocate isolation. Those same people will be back in a few years promoting compounds again, except they'll have invented a new name for them which sounds more impressive. Coordinated Myo recruitment or some bs.
Working on basics, good foundations over time and good form is boring. TikTok has little time for thatFaith in Jesus first and faith in squats second.
Then other details will start to slot themselves into place.

Can't say I have because I don't go looking for influencers, but it's not surprising because the driving need of an influencer is to try and say something novel in order to stand out as though you have a new recipe or secret beyond consistency, hard work, and patience. For my part, I don't believe there are any absolutely essential exercises, compounds included, but that's a far cry from calling them useless. They have stood the test of time as highly efficient ways to build muscle.

We're 20 years into the Crossfit era, it's about time for a swing back of the pendulum. The college gyms I've been in forever changed pretty abruptly about 15 years ago. All of a sudden everyone was doing cleans and deadlifts, even if the gym wasn't set up for it, and the machines were abandoned. Maybe now some think they're being new and different by going the other direction.
That being said, I haven't seen anyone knocking compound movements yet.

If I shrug while doing behind the back barbell wrist curls, is it a compound movement?

No i have not seen or read the discussions but i have observed what the under 20's do in the gym and once they put the phones down( very rare) they do sports specific moves.
Many i have not even seen before.
The Latinas do squat/deadlift( ass shapers) but the men do a crazy mix of "athletic" training exercises with bands, box jumping, and a few regular weight training exercises.
The good news is that, the machines that i like are FREEEE TO USEThere is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!
