Chief officer of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Agnelo Fernandes has asked all the agencies and contractors working for the municipality to complete the tenant verification process of their workers at the earliest, failing which their contract would not be
renewed.
Speaking to media, Fernandes said that “the councillor Ravindra Naik had complained during the council meeting that the workers engaged by the contractor for the door-to-door waste collection were committing thefts.” He had also pointed out that these waste collectors were lifting footwear and other items while collecting waste from door-to-door. “Since the councillors had voiced a serious concern about the issue, all the agencies working for the council have been directed to submit details of tenant verification forms including the Aadhaar card copies to the MMC,” he said.
Fernandes further said that the MMC is also keeping a track on the credentials of labourers engaged by various contractors working for the MMC. “If any more complains come from the councillors, the concerned contractor’s contract would not be renewed. The councillors are also asked to keep a watch on the door-to-door waste collectors,” he said.
It may be recalled that there are nearly 150 workers working for the two contractors engaged by the MMC. But none of them have done the tenant verification of these workers and as such, action could not be initiated since there is no record of these workers maintained by the contractors or the MMC.
