Today on 8th November, Google has created a special doodle of an Indian cell biologist Dr. Kamal Ranadive to mark her 140th birth anniversary. She is a world-renowned biomedical researcher who is most recognized for her groundbreaking cancer studies.
Ranadive was one of the first Indian researchers to propose a connection between breast cancer and genetics, as well as to identify links between cancers and such viruses.
On this day in 1917, Kamal Samarath, better known as Kamal Ranadive, was born in Pune, India. Her father’s encouragement to seek a medical career inspired Ranadive to excel academically, but she discovered her passion in biology instead.

What do you know about Dr. Kamal Ranadive?
- Dr. Ranadive is well-known for her exemplary cancer research.
- In the year 1949, she received a doctorate in cytology, the study of cells.
- At the same time, she was also working as a researcher at the Indian Cancer Research Center.
- She also had an esteemed fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
- After returning to Mumbai, she set up the country’s first tissue culture laboratory.
- Kamal also offered health and medical advice to women in remote communities surrounding Rajpur and Ahmednagar through government-sponsored programs run by the Indian Women Association.
- Even after retiring in 1989, she continued to educate women in rural Maharashtra areas.
- In 1982, Kamal received the Padma Bhushan (India’s third highest civilian honor) for her contributions to medicine. She received the Medical Council of India’s inaugural Silver Jubilee Research Award in 1964. A gold medal and a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 were included in this award. She also received the G. J. Watumull Foundation Prize in Microbiology in 1964.
- She was an Emeritus Medical Scientist of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
