CPD investigating reports of Chicago cops belonging to Oath Keepers

Leaked documents obtained by National Public Radio and WNYC/Gothamist suggest that 13 members of the Chicago police department have belonged to the far right anti-government group The Oath Keepers.

Why it matters: The leader of the group, Stewart Rhodes, encourages members to "refuse to comply with any" legislation President Joe Biden passes.

What they're saying: One CPD employee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told NPR he let his Oath Keepers membership lapse years ago and "didn't even know this thing still existed."

State of play: The Chicago Police Department issued a statement to NPR and Axios saying they have initiated an investigation.

  • "While CPD members have the First Amendment right to express their personal views, the Department has strict rules of conduct prohibiting members from engaging in any behavior that would impede the Department's efforts to achieve its goals or discredit the Department. … We have zero tolerance for hate or extremism within CPD."
