Kangpokpi police recovers car stolen by cop

Imphal, November 07 2021: Kangpokpi police recovered a car stolen by a police officer from a Manipur origin man, who actually purchased the vehicle from a second-hand dealer of the city.
The incident occurred on October 20 in one of the cities of North East states.
The incident came to light when victim of robbery and illegal detention, namely Heljamang of Keithelmanbi Military Colony, Kangpokpi approached SP Kangpokpi on November 3 and sought help.
Outraged over the incident, SP Karthik Malladi assured of helping the victim and sent SI Seigoulen Sithlou of Kangpokpi PS on November 5 to the place of occurrence by flight (air) to enquire into the chain of events.
With the assistance of senior IPS officers of the state, the vehicle was recovered by evening on the same day and handed over to the owner on November 6 by Kangpokpi police station.
As per report filed by Heljamang, he purchased a Hyundai i20 car from a second-hand showroom through a dealer after verification for Rs 4,80,000 in one of the cities of NE states and then kept the vehicle at a servicing centre on November 20 as he has a long drive to Manipur.
On the same day at about 4pm, the second-hand car dealer came while he was staying at the flat of his relative and called him through phone.
When he went out, a police team led by inspector/officer-in-charge of the locality forcefully handcuffed him and took him in a police vehicle to a police station where the officer in charge questioned him for several hours asking whereabouts of drugs and arms he allegedly brought.
The victim told the officer-in-charge that he came to purchase second hand car and the same is at a servicing centre and has no knowledge about drugs and arms.
He also showed the sale deed and other documents pertaining to the car to the officer.
In the report, Heljamang also said that he was detained in police lock-up for a night and his whereabouts not informed to anyone including his family.
On October 21, the police team took him to the servicing centre where he kept his car and both the car and him were taken to a nearby second-hand car dealer and forcibly made to sign on a blank sale deed and robbed the car.
He was then taken to the bus terminal and made to board a bus bound for Manipur, the report added.
With the intervention of SP Karthik Malladi, the vehicle was recovered and handed over to the victim.
Meanwhile, the SP appealed to people of the state to report to police instances of harassment, illegal detentions, robbery, etc., done in other states and assured that all help will be extended.
