The Congress on Monday targeted the Centre over its decision to lift the ban on dealings with Italian defence major Leonardo SpA, earlier known as Finmeccanica, and asked whether the ruling BJP has entered into a “secret deal”.

Leonardo SpA’s subsidiary AgustaWestland had been involved in the alleged scam surrounding the Rs 3,500-crore VVIP chopper deal, and the BJP had repeatedly criticised the Congress over the same.

On Monday, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Agusta was corrupt earlier. Now, it is clean after being washed in BJP laundry. #RIPlogic.”

Addressing a press conference, party spokesperson Gourav Vallabh alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government are “unequivocally guilty of shielding, protecting, and promoting AgustaWestland and its parent company Finmecanica”.

He said, “What is the secret deal entered between Modi government and Agusta-Finmecanica? Is it now okay to deal with a company that Modi ji called ‘corrupt-bribe giver-bogus’? Does it mean that the fake bogey of corruption created just before the 2019 elections is being given a quiet burial? …What will happen to the investigation initiated by the Congress government against Agusta-Finmecanica? What will happen to pending arbitration against Agusta-Finmecanica? Is this going to have a loss to exchequer?Congress questions govt call to lift ban on deals with AgustaWestland parent
