A faculty member from a city college said many students were struggling to adapt to offline mode after writing the past three semester exams in online mode. "They are writing very brief answers and struggling to do experiments as they did not have exposure to laboratories," he said.

Others said the biggest challenge would be the transition from unsupervised tests to supervised exams in halls. Loyola College has informed students that exams will be in physical mode. "We need to motivate them to write in offline mode. Online exams are not going to help in the long term," said principal Thomas Amirtham.

The college has many students from Middle East countries and from various parts of India. "These students will have several issues including getting visas in switching over to offline exams. We are simultaneously working out different styles of assessment," he added.

Madras Christian College plans one internal assessment test in offline mode as preparation. "If we ask students to directly take the offline exam, they will struggle. We plan to conduct a physical mode exam even for students from other states," said principal Paul Wilson. The college plans to increase exam halls and hold physical exams in a staggered manner.

DG Vaishnav College has instructed its faculty members to conduct internal tests strictly. "We have postponed semester exams to December-end to prepare students for offline mode exam," said principal S Santhosh Baboo.

The higher education department has instructed all universities to avoid online exams to improve quality of semester exams.

Guru Nanak College principal M G Ragunathan said students were not interested in physical exams. "We need to give them counselling before exams," he said. The college has conducted an internal test in offline mode to train students. University of Madras officials said they would consult with affiliated colleges before finalising physical mode exams.
