New Delhi: The Indian batsmen’s failure to score enough against strong teams was the main reason for the team’s regular campaign in the T20 World Cup, said legendary former captain Sunil Gavaskar and encouraged the team to change its approach in power play overs.
“The way in which Pakistan and New Zealand bowlers restricted our batsmen, did not let them score points freely, was the main reason why India did not progress. “Dew made batting easy (in the second innings) because the ball did not spin, spinners’ balls went straight,” he said.
“Batting second was an advantage, but if you had 180 odd runs, your bowlers would have gotten that cushion of 20-30 runs. When you make 111 (against New Zealand) then dew does not come into the picture. We did not make runs and that is the main reason, nothing else. “
The iconic former batsman said the team did not score enough in that phase against stronger oppositions. “I do not think wholesale changes will make any difference. You have to change your approach, such as taking advantage of the power play bowls that India has not done in the last few world tournaments. ”
“The fact that in the first 6 overs there are only 2 fielders outside the 30-yard circle, India did not use it for the last few ICC tournaments. Whenever India faces a strong team, one that has good bowlers … India cannot score points. So it has to change, ”he said.
Gavaskar also cited fieldwork as one of the reasons for India’s understated performance. “The second and most important thing is that they have players who are phenomenal in field work. The way New Zealand fielded, saved runs, took catches… it stood out.
“Even if the attack is normal, the pitch is calm, good fielding can make a big difference. “If you look at Indian team, apart from 3-4 outstanding fielders, you can not rely on the rest to save runs or dive at the border,” he said.
