In shocking news, recently, Tripura police invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against 102 Twitter account. The Tripura police said that these accounts were allegedly spreading misinformation on social media. In response to that, Twitter said that they have not taken any action on the reported content at this time. And, further said that Twitter strongly believes in defending and respecting the voice of their users.
The Tripura police imposed UAPA on activists, journalists and social media users who posted and condemned the Tripura violence. It is reported that Tripura govt imposed UAPA on Journalist Shyam Meera Singh for merely saying three words, that was, “Tripura is Burning.”
The email of Twitter was shared through Shyam Meera Singh’s account in which he said that he received a mail from Twitter at 2 am. They said ‘Tripura gov. has asked Twitter to take action on his account but they refused to do so. Because Twitter strongly believes in defending and respecting the voice of its users.
He further thanked Twitter and said that now it is the turn of the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the Editors Guild of India said that they are shocked by the action initiated against people who were reporting and writing on the Tripura communal violence.

In the statement, the Editors Guild wrote that this is an extremely disturbing trend where such a harsh law, wherein the processes of investigation and bail applications are extremely rigorous and overbearing, is being used for merely reporting on and protesting against communal violence.
