Chennai, Nov 8 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister
KKSSR Ramachandran on Monday said four people were killed in rain-related
incidents in the State in the last 24 hours.
Talking to reporters after reviewing the flood situation in the city, he said the
deaths were reported in Chennai, Theni and Madurai districts of the State.
He said a total of 16 cattles have died in the heavy rains, which has fully
damaged 26 hutments and partially damaged 237 hutments.
He also said while five houses were completely damaged in the rains,
65 houses suffered partial damages.
As the main reservoirs near the city are fast filling up due to heavy rains,
Mr Ramachandran said surplus waters were released from Poondi, Redhills,
Sholavaram, Chembarambakkam, Veeranam and Thervoy Kandigai reservoirs
after issuing flood warning to the people.
He said since the rains had not abated in the city, 169 relief camps were opened
in the city and 889 people were housed in 48 such camps. A total of 1,52,451 food
packets were distributed to the people.
He said giant pumps are being used to pump out water from subways and water
logged areas coming under the Greater Chennai Corporation limits.
