Overflowing lakes inundate Avadi, Tambaram
Several areas in the newly formed corporations outside the city limits -- Avadi and Tambaram -- have been inundated with rainwater flooding the streets and entering homes for the second day on Monday. Residents demand that special officers should be allotted to their neighbourhoods too to ensure that the stagnated water is drained off as the authorities are struggling to handle waterlogging with the limited resources. In the southern suburbs, residents and associations have also been chipping in to drain out water from many areas.
Small factories suffer due to rain, large ones manage
Production at factories in the industrial estates of Ambattur and Thirumudivakkam was impacted as flooding and lack of power supply disrupted production schedules. However, for the larger ones in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam region, it was work as usual. A N Gireeshan, president of The Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association (AIEMA), said, “Even though water has receded from shop floors today, the roads are still waterlogged.” Power supply was restored partially in the estate. Units in the northern side of the estate were severely affected while the southern ones were partially impacted.
500 pumps pressed into service to drain water
As rain held off in many parts of the city, though the skies were overcast, the civic body used more than 500 pumps to clear flood waters from several areas. Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said only 15 mm rainfall was received on Monday. “On Sunday 317 water logged areas were reported. From 140 locations, water has receded. In 177 locations it was less than two feet deep,” he said. Bedi asked people to not panic but be prepared for heavy rain on November 10, 11, 12 by stocking up on medicines and drinking water.
Faulty drains add to city’s civic woes
Areas like T Nagar, Alwarpet, Pulianthope, Velachery, Kolathur, Korattur, and Perambur remained water logged even after Sunday evening when the rain relented not because there were no drains but because they were either not constructed with the proper gradient, slope and invert levels or blocks weren’t cleared. This, said Jayaram Venkatesan of Arappor Iyakkam, proved the city hadn’t learned any lessons after the 2015 deluge. “Thousands of crores were spent on projects after 2015 and because the implementing agencies were corrupt and the officials didn’t monitor the projects well, we are facing a similar deluge fear now.”
Chennai stays in with fingers crossed

The rain forecast for November 9 may increase on November 10 and 11 with heavy to very heavy and isolated extremely heavy spells.
