'We're Here's' Bob the Drag Queen Will Officiate Your Wedding Like Barbara and Yvon

Wedding bells are chiming in Episode 5 of "We're Here" as co-host Bob the Drag Queen officiated for her drag children Barbara and Yvon.

The newest episode of the HBO series sees Bob, Eureka and Shangela travel to Evansville, Indiana, where they met with the activist couple, Methodist minister Pastor Craig, and Tunisian immigrant Kaïs, whose sexual identity meant his life was at risk in his home country.

While Pastor Craig appeared on the programme to show his support for same-sex couples getting married, something he is not allowed to do in the Methodist church, ordained minister Bob was able to wed Barbara and Yvon.

Bob spoke with Newsweek about the nuptials, which took place during the live show the trio put on with their drag children.

Bob will officiate your wedding

On whether she'd officiate more weddings following the episode, Bob said: "I mean I would, I had a lot of fun doing it."

"It was actually really lovely, and Barbara and Yvon were super sweet and it was a real honor to do that for people who are such important members of their community.

"Barbara and Yvon are such icons especially for queer people, being out for something like 50 years they've been together, really amazing duo of women, a great couple."

Bob went on: "My first time officiating was for Dusty Ray Bottoms who is a friend of mine, she asked me to officiate her wedding before I was even on [RuPaul's] Drag Race she just said, you know her and her boyfriend met at my drag show and she wanted me be there when they got married."

"And I was there, I officiated, so yea I'm down to officiate some more weddings baby, call me up girl, book me honey!"

Praise for Barbara and Yvon

Show creators Stephen Warren and Johnnie Ingram also spoke to Newsweek about the episode, heaping praise on Barbara and Yvon.

Warren said: "Barbara and Yvon are extraordinary people, I mean they have an energy... when they saw we were doing this they put on their audition tape 'you know we always said we'd only get married if we were married in an arena by a drag queen and here's an opportunity.'

"But, they didn't tell us that much more about themselves in the tape, and then we got to know them more when we talked to them and they were perfect!

"And to watch Barbara, if you look at the episode the thing that struck Johnnie and I was Barbara watching Yvon is sheer love, it's just love.

"She just sits there with a smile on her face and eyes like [loved-up], and whatever Yvon says, and she says a lot, about politics, music, blah, blah, blah, everything, there is no wrong, and Yvon just adores Barbara."

Ingram added that they felt the couple's wedding was especially poignant because of Pastor Craig's involvement in the show, given he is unable to marry same-sex couples even if he wants to.

He said: "The importance of them getting on stage with a Methodist minister who can't marry an LGBTQ+ couple and also with Kaïs, who comes from a very different religious background in Tunisia and [is] a practising Muslim, that even though it's completely transparent, them all completely celebrating themselves and their uniqueness on stage is powerful.

"And I think it was inspiring for Kaïs to see how much they were fighting for that community, a community he struggles to exist in."

Pastor Craig

Eureka, meanwhile, discussed their drag child Pastor Craig with Newsweek, sharing how they felt about having him be a part of the show.

They said: "I mean it was really incredible to work with Pastor Craig because Pastor Craig was adorable and learned all of the words to their song the first day.

"So one thing I commend Pastor Craig on is he came into rehearsal and knew every word to the song, that made me really proud of [him] and made me realise he was taking it seriously, even though there were moments where I felt he was making it a joke because straight men are often uncomfortable with drag and they like to laugh at it, like 'oh it's this big joke'.

"That was the only struggle we had with Pastor Craig, reminding him that this might be funny to you but it's very serious to others.

"It was something he was immediately like 'I'm sorry I want to do this the right way', he was just such a blessing and a light to be around."

Eureka went on: "Someone like that who works in the church is so beautiful to see because growing up in the church I was in a super religious household so I just wish we had more people in the church like that.

"I don't think Pastor Craig realise[s] how important this was for him to do, not only for his daughter, because it touched me, I was emotional talking to this man about religion because I had such negative experiences.

"To know you have a minister who is willing to do something like this, this is the church I would go to, you know?"

We're Here Season 2 continues on HBO every Monday at 9pm E.T.
