The livelihood of the poor was affected by the general freeze implemented across the country due to the spread of corona infection. With that in mind, the central government announced last year that free food grains would be distributed through fair price shops to poor families identified under the National Food Security Program. 

Following this, in order to meet the food needs of the poor, since march last year, the prime minister has launched the Karib kalyan Yojana, which provides free foodgrains to about 80 crore people through ration shops.

An additional 5 kg of food grain was provided free of cost. It was announced that free grain would be provided from april to june last year. Later curfews were imposed as the spread of corona infection did not abate. 

Thus, The foodgrains scheme was further extended and finally extended till november 30 by the Central Government. In this context, the central government has announced that the scheme of providing free food grains in ration shops will not be extended after november 30. 

Federal Food Secretary sudhanshu pandey told reporters that the supply of food grains was good enough to be available in the open market and that the distribution of free foodgrains would not be extended beyond the 30th.

Peanut oil prices have come down from Rs 5 to Rs 20 per kg in various parts of the country and the price of palm oil has come down from Rs 5 to Rs 18 per kg in various parts of the country. The price of soybean oil has come down from Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kg, sunflower oil from Rs 5 to Rs 11 per kg and sunflower oil from Rs 5 to Rs 20 per kg. He said that as petrol and diesel prices have come down, the cost of transportation has come down and cooking oil prices are expected to fall further.
