A man was found dead in the parking lot of a Sonic in Lee’s Summit.

The Lee’s Summit Police Department is investigating the death as a homicide.

At 6:30 p.m. police officers responded to reports of shots fired at the 3700 block of NE Ralph Powell Road, according to Sgt. Christopher Depue, spokesman for the department. When they arrived, officers found one man dead in the parking lot of the Sonic restaurant.

Witnesses at the scene recalled hearing a loud “disturbance” between people in the parking lot before shots were fired, Depue said.

The incident was caught on video by about six different witnesses and security surveillance in the lot, he said.

The suspect fled the scene a few minutes before police arrived, Depue said.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the police department said an investigation was underway.

Police are not releasing a full description of the victim, suspect, or the suspect’s vehicle at this time.

Lee’s Summit Police are still interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage.
