Australian State of New South Wales Transitions to Booster Phase of Vaccine Rollout

As Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state has begun to see a tapering of its vaccination rates, authorities announced on Sunday that the state would transition to the booster program phase of its vaccination rollout. As the state inches towards its 95 per cent inoculation target as of midnight Friday, 93.9 per cent of the NSW’s above 16 years population have had at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, and 89.7 per cent have been fully vaccinated, Xinhua news agency reported.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, during Sunday’s press conference, said the state would transit to its booster program phase, focusing first on the state’s most vulnerable population.

In the same period, India’s total addition to the COVID-19 death toll was 7749 of which Kerala’s backlog death count alone accounted for 5299 (68.38%). The addition of the backlog deaths has taken Kerala’s COVID-19 mortality rate from 0.6% to 0.7%.

On the other hand, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has stocks of over 5 lakh Covid vaccine doses for the first time since the vaccination drive began on January 16. But civic officials say that only a few have turned up to get jabbed due to the festival season. “Even those scheduled to take the second shot have kept away,” a report in Times of India quoted officials as saying.

India reported 10,853 new cases, 526 deaths and 12,432 recoveries in the last 24 hours. Active caseload of the country stands at 1,44,845 currently. It is the lowest caseload in the past 260 days according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Total vaccination stands at 1,08,21,66,365.

While this is good news, Maharashtra, which had seen very severe first and second waves is likely to experience an equally severe third wave, according to projections made by the Centre and shared with the state government. According to a media report, the state is likely to see an active caseload of Covid-19 disease reach up to 1.2 million during the peak of the third wave. Therefore, the state government has begun preparations for the third wave already. The state’s peak active caseload – 698,354 – was seen on April 25 this year.

In a report in Hindustan Times, N Ramaswami, commissioner, National Health Mission, Maharashtra, a vertical of the union health ministry that works closely with the state said, “We are preparing for 1.2 million active cases in the third wave.”

Previously, Maharashtra’s health minister, Rajesh Tope, has said that the COVID task force is wary of the the third wave, which may hit the state post Diwali. “The second wave of the pandemic is not over yet. But there is no favourable condition for a third wave as of now. The state task force has cautioned of a third wave post the Diwali season. We are assessing the situation,” Tope had said.

Past month, however, the state number of Covid-19 patients who are currently on treatment has dropped by 55.6%. Maharashtra has also not witnessed any sudden increase in cases off-late, despite relaxations on restrictions. Tope on Saturday said there can be no room for complacency. On October 6, the state had 33,181 active Covid-19 patients, which dropped to 14,714 on November 6. The state’s peak active caseload – 698,354 – was recorded on April 25 this year.
