- A Mtunzini policeman was arrested for the rape of a teen he offered a lift to.
- According to IPID, he is also accused of locking her in his house and threatening her with his service pistol.
- She even tried to withdraw her police report against him when he threatened to kill her.
A KwaZulu-Natal teen who accepted a lift from a policeman while on her way to buy airtime, survived an alleged ordeal of rape, being locked in a house, and threatened with murder.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the 15-year-old girl left a traditional ceremony at Ndulinde Reserve on 13 June with a friend to go buy airtime.
On their way, the police officer offered them a lift to the Spaza shop, but he just kept driving when he reached the shop.
When they asked what was going on, he put his gun on an armrest in the car.
The girls knew they were in danger and when he stopped at his house in Mandeni they asked to go to the toilet.
They used the opportunity to make a break for it, but he caught one of the girls and was alleged to have raped her.
He was alleged to have locked her in his house and raped her when he got back from work the following day.
On 15 June, he dropped her off near her home.
Investigating
She reported the alleged rape to the police, who began investigating.
He is accused of striking again on 27 October, when he convinced a 16-year-old girl to get in his car, but he also took her to his home and allegedly raped her the whole day.
He only let her go the next day. She reported the alleged rape to police.
On 30 October, he threatened the 16-year-old girl with murder if she did not withdraw the rape case against him.
She duly went to the police to withdraw it, but the duty officers felt something was amiss.
They called the station commander for assistance and IPID was involved.
After speaking to her, a case of intimidation, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice was opened against the constable, and he was arrested.
He appeared in the Mtunzini Magistrate's Court on charges of rape on 5 November relating to both attacks.
The 36-year-old police officer is in custody pending his bail application on 22 November.
