The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has sent its first Hemp Acreage and Production Survey to almost 300 Michigan producers to collect data on the total planted and harvested area, yield, production and value of hemp in the United States.

The survey will provide critical data about the hemp industry to assist growers, regulatory agencies, state governments, processors and other key industries entities, said Marlo D. Johnson, director of the USDA’s Great Lakes Regional Office.

It was not known if any farmers in Monroe County took part in the survey.

Survey recipients were asked to respond to a secure site online at agcounts.usda.gov, using a 12-digit survey code mailed with the survey, or to mail completed questionnaires back in the prepaid envelope provided by Oct. 25.

All information reported by individuals will be kept confidential as required by federal law, Johnson said. NASS will publish survey results Feb. 17, 2022, on its website and in the NASS Quick Stats searchable database. For more information about the survey, visit the hemp survey web page. For assistance with the survey, respondents were encouraged to call the regional office at (517) 324-5300.

The Domestic Hemp Production Program established by the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (in the 2018 Farm Bill) allows for cultivation of hemp under certain conditions.
