Man dead after shooting outside north-east side bar Saturday

·1 min read

A man has died after a shooting early Saturday morning, police say.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers responded to the 5400 block of Massachusetts Avenue about 5 a.m. They found the man shot and wounded outside Grand, a sports bar, and U'Neek Foods & Catering. He was found in critical condition, but died at a nearby hospital less than an hour later, according to IMPD.

The establishments are located in the middle of several auto repair and service shops, with the area relatively quiet Saturday morning as IMPD detectives and the Marion County Forensics team were investigating.

The death adds to the city's grim homicide numbers. As of 9 a.m. Saturday, Indianapolis had recorded 235 total homicides in 2021. Last year, there were 245 homicides, according to IMPD.

With the investigation of Saturday's shooting still ongoing, IMPD could not immediately confirm if the death would be classified as a criminal homicide. When that determination is made depends on the case, according to IMPD.

On Wednesday, Indianapolis reached 215 criminal homicides — tying the record set in 2021.
