Irked by the menace of roadside dumping in its jurisdiction, Curti-Khandepar village panchayat has installed around 16 CCTV cameras at various spots to keep a watch on the culprits.

By doing so, the Curti-Khandepar panchayat has become the first VP to install CCTV cameras in Ponda taluka. For the said task the panchayat has spent around Rs 5 lakh on CCTVs and has decided to fine the offenders Rs 10,000 for the roadside dumping of the garbage.

According to sarpanch Sunil Khedekar, roadside garbage dumping has become a major issue in the village panchayat area and some spots have emerged as black spots wherein domestic waste is collected in plastic bags and dumped by the roadside. The emerging black spots have not only become eyesore in the village but also pose a serious threat to public health and environment.

Naga Masjid and Haveli-Curti areas are the worst affected by the menace and despite having a door-to-door garbage collection system, some ill-mannered people are creating such menace in the village.

Taking note of the same, the panchayat has decided to act strictly on the garbage dumping and fixed a fine of Rs 10,000 as per act. And to keep watch on the activities, the panchayat has installed around 16 hi-tech CCTV cameras at such spots which will be monitored by the village panchayat, panchayat members informed.

The village panchayat members also believe that besides keeping a watch on garbage dumping, cameras can also be useful for policing activity and to track anti-social activities.
